Lives and works in Martinique

Twenty large wings spanning 270 by 170 cm fly out of a fermentation vat, drawn by the call of the bright greenery of a window, before tumbling suddenly as if irresistibly struck down by the vats. Despite being stapled together from black straw, they seem silvery and glint under José Cloquel's subtle lighting which scatters the shapes. The wings and their cast shadows dance together to the rhythm of a short composition by Jeff Baillard, around four minutes long, blending concrete sounds made by the machinery with guitar chords.

Julie Bessard's Ombres Portées (Cast Shadows) crosses the artistic boundaries between drawing and sculpture,. Reflections of her inner world, projections of her secret imagination, traces of an absence, these cast-off outlines, masks, wings, jawbones, corsets, cocoons, chrysalids, insects are repopulated by coiled phantasms in the byways of the unconscious.

These shape–signs are real drawings in space. They hark back to the challenges of modern sculpture which appeared in the 1920's and 30's. The works are more part of a process rather than finished objects, and float independently, in suspense and question the idea of the installation, of the relation of the work to the exhibition space and of the sharing of that sensitive space with the public.
