In the dark recesses of some cities , some amazing installations catch our eyes , strange heaps of blankets , of clothes which seem to contain a human shape .
I drew some inspiration out of that to give shape to some recumbent figures , which after going through various metamorphosis , have become dolls , funerary-type dolls , known as Katchinas.
In the mid-seventies , I had already designed some small white dolls from bits of old sheet rags and I used to install them in black boxes and cases ; it was meant to evoke the vision of a partitioned , standardizing and alienating society.
Then came some fragments of architecture covered with black dust ; then some frameworks , sorts of altarpieces with hues of blue , of gold: some kind of nostalgia for the era that preceded the arrival of Christopher Columbus.
I also built some frameworks out of grocery pallets: places of confinement ,of detention . The idea was that somehow , with an archaeologist’s mind, I was to search and explore my confused collective memory , the history of the Caribbean.
The work The Spirit of the Caribbean (2006-2007) is a protest.
Since the seventies , I have deliberately chosen to express myself through archaic forms , against an ever-present use of the image.
