The philosophy of the old Jamaica Mutual Life Insurance Society was to promote activities which would contribute to national development as well as turning onto profitable investments. The Mutual Life Gallery was created in 1975 under this policy. The bequest of the space housing the gallery walls was to contribute to the development of Jamaica’s visual arts. In exchange the gallery would donate one work of art from each exhibition to enable the insurance company to build up its collection.
Following the liquidation of the Mutual Life Insurance Company, a new management board was set up. The Mutual Gallery and Art Centre (better known as the Mutual Gallery) was set up in October 2001 with the aim of promoting Jamaican artists in Jamaica and outside the country.
Since its inception, the Mutual Gallery has followed a solid agenda of exhibitions covering the various branches of the arts, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and prints, exhibiting traditional and modern creations of recognised and less well known artists.
The Mutual Gallery’s current direction is above all to exhibit and promote promising artists and avant-garde works. The gallery’s calendar features two annual exhibitions for young artists: one of them conceived for artists with less than ten years experience and the other, a competition offering a cash bursary, being restricted to artists under 40 years of age.
