THE IMAGINATIVE AND THE REAL.
While the six artists are known for their figurative work, the background influence of their paintings differs significantly as some artists work in the genre of Photographic Realism where the treatment of form, colour and space emphasize their connection with the actual visual objects. At the other end of the spectrum is Imaginative Realism, a field that has increasingly gained predominance in contemporary expressions encompassing Magical Realism, Fantastic Realism, Surrealism and Visionary Realism. Studio Swap
Lovelace’s new, large-scale paintings demonstrate the artist’s increased focus on the human body in various environments and situations. He has been using performance as part of his work process, executing and photographing specific actions, out of which he then develops his paintings. Short stop-motion films are also produced from these performances.
Parallel to his work with the body and movement, Lovelace has continued his long-standing series of Carnival and 'Mas' oriented paintings. A selection of the most recent of these works will also be presented. The artist has also been a fervent documenter of his works in progress as well as day-to-day life and moods in the studio, and a selection of these and other images will form part of the projected piece.

This project will examine the visual arts and aesthetic development across the Caribbean, considering the histories of the Spanish, French, Dutch and English islands and their Diasporas. An international advisory group of scholars and artists are working with us to plan and present scholarly discussions, public programming, events, educational components, the multi-venue exhibition and a major resource publication. Highlighting rarely-seen works in thematic sections ranging from the Haitian Revolution to the present, the exhibition is both ambitious and groundbreaking.

Exhibition of the works realized during the workshop with Nicole Bianchet teaching Painting and Rem van den Bosch teaching Photography. Many technics were discussed, like collage or how to integrate your own personality in to the paintings or drawings. Participants had look deep in to them self to come with al kind of new works concerning the self-potrait. That leaves us with beautiful works by the participants with ages as low as thirteen.

El proyecto expositivo Alas y raíces: Ada Balcácer es una propuesta del Centro León que se inscribe en su programa sobre Grandes Maestros Consagrados en las Artes Visuales de la República Dominicana. Esta muestra antológica recoge las realizaciones más representativas de Ada Balcácer a lo largo de sesenta años de quehacer artístico, sin perder de vista el compromiso de la artista con la sociedad y su tiempo. Del mismo modo, la exposición difunde los aportes teóricos de esta creadora a las artes visuales del Caribe.

"Derrière le voile" de Luz Severino

"Derrière le voile" réunit des peintures et une installation monumentale de Luz Severino. Ce projet, en prenant comme référence ces pays où la liberté d’expression n’existe pas, tente une approche d’une réalité fictive. Avec "Derrière le voile", le chromatisme et les formes se cherchent dans la superposition. Les formes naissent et disparaissent à travers des transparences. Dans cette proposition, cette liberté d’expression est symbolisée par des chaussures fermées, enveloppées et attachées dans de la toile. La société ici représentée ne peut ni se mouvoir, ni avancer. "Derrière le voile" évoque l’avenir des peuples illustrant ainsi ce qui se passe actuellement dans ces pays africains et arabes qui revendiquent la liberté.

The Bermuda National Gallery (BNG) is delighted to announce the upcoming exhibition, opening January 20, 2012, featuring the artwork of talented, award –winning Jamaican artist Ebony G. Patterson. This exhibition explores an area of popular culture, specifically examining the identity of a powerful demographic in the island context, young black men.
Ebony G. Patterson’s artwork is very much a reflection on the ways in which young black men shape their identities within the Jamaican dancehall culture, and in this reflection she posits the question: How do these young men craft their masculinity? Into the Mix
Into the Mix is a conversation about how materiality addresses the complexities of cultural stereotypes in an exhibition featuring ten Caribbean artists. Their artwork takes on new meanings in a context where cultural history is influenced by outside migrating populations, colonial governments, tourists and the popular culture machine. In many societies, craft and hand-worked items help establish a culture of self-worth in the minds of the local population. The creation of these objects is influenced by the economic opportunity presented through tourism, yet souvenirs represent the visitor’s interests and are taken out of context.

Hommage à Haydee Venegas (1950 - 2011)
Face à la mort d’une personne chère, nous restons sans voix. Pourtant, un silence absolu est impossible, alors nous parlons en espérant que les mots exprimeront notre chagrin ou du moins nous permettront de le partager avec d’autres.
Haydee Venegas nous a quitté le 31 décembre 2011. Avec sa mort, nous perdons une collègue, une amie, une critique d’art, un professeur et un merveilleux être humain. Haydee était un membre important de l’AICA depuis longtemps : trésorière de l’AICA Porto Rico, Vice-présidente de l’AICA international et dernièrement notre trésorière. En tant que trésorière, elle resta impliqué dans nos activités quotidiennes jusqu’au dernier moment de sa vie.
Ceux d’entre nous qui ont participé au congrès d’Asunción garderont en mémoire le meilleur d’elle, car, bien que déjà très malade, Haydee nous éclaira chaque jour avec son incroyable optimisme et son grand sens de l’humour. Rien n’égale la générosité du sourire d’une personne faisant face à la mort.
Nous présentons nos sincères condoléances à la famille d’Haydee, ses amis et collègues de Porto Rico. Tous les membres de l’AICA pleurent aujourd’hui sa mort.
L’AICA rendra un hommage à Haydee lors de son conseil d’administration de mars. Vous trouverez ci-dessous des messages envoyés ces derniers jours par quelques-uns de nos membres qui ont très bien connu Haydee et qui l’admiraient. Elle nous manquera terriblement.

Myrna Rodriguez, was the godmother of AICA Southern Caribbean. She encouraged those of us writing in the region to join AICA Puerto Rico in the mid 1990s and then guided us through the process of setting up our own regional chapter and continued her support by attending a number of our events. Haydee had agreed last year to contribute to a book on curating in the Caribbean, due to be launched at the Havana Biennial next May. It will be a fitting gesture that this book be dedicated in her honor.
I will dearly miss my good friend.
